Many people are familiar with spas but for others it's a whole new experience. The number of spas and the wide variety of services available may seem intimidating at first, but a little knowledge goes a long way to ensure the experience you envision is what you actually end up with. Some of the most common concerns are, "how do i know if the place is any good? What do I need to do when I get there? What is it going to cost? Will it be worth it?" First, figure out where and when you can go and how much to spend, and how much time you have. Once all these have been answered, you sure know what to do. So, go ahead and indulge yourself in spa treatment, and see what all the hype is about.
THE TREATMENTS.
CHEMICAL PEEL
CLAIM: Your face will be left smooth and glowing.
PROS: Glycolic can stimulate collagen production to smooth fine lines, lactic acid can correct brown spots and salicylic acids prevent breakouts by cleaning out pores.
CONS: Burns are always a risk especially from peels with strong acids and low pH balance. Physicians need to closely monitor the procedure.
MICRODERMABRASION.
CLAIM: Pores to appear slimmer, fine lines, less noticeable.
PROS: While dark spots can indeed be lessened, the procedure won't get rid of wrinkles. Skin appearance does improve. The crystals remove dead skin cells that trap dirt.
CONS: The more clogged the skin, the coarser the tools need to be and that could lead to irritation later.
STEAMING EXTRACTION.
CLAIM: Steam opens the pores and loosens dirt trapped below. That makes extractions that follow less painful and helps oil absorbing masks penetrate the skin deeply.
PROS: The skin softens and is more elastic. Exfoliation and warm steam open the pores so extractions are easier to do with less risk of scaring.
CONS: Too much heat can cause irritation, dehydration and broken capillaries. Overly zealous extractions can push the fluid deeper and cause marks.
OXYGEN.
CLAIM: Oxygen hydrates the skin, making it look temporarily more dewy. It is particularly recommended for anyone with dry skin, smokers or frequent fliers.
PROS: Oxygen gives a blast of rosy glow. many of the facials contain a cocktail of vitamins and nutrients that can plump up the fine lines.
CONS: Got an oxygen gas chamber? That's what you'd really need for oxygen to actually penetrate the skin. Which means that results are more of a feel good sensation and actually not proven.
