Omojuwa Speaks on The Shame Called Murtala Muhammed International Airport

How much does a country need to keep its busiest international airport from running like an oven? The Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has to be the hottest airport in the world. It is easily the hottest I have travelled through and I have been through quite a lot of airports. Even the Nairobi airport in Kenya that was engulfed by fire is not as hot as the MMIA. You should not even get started with comparing it with the airport in Cape Town or Johannesburg, South Africa. Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport, Accra may be small but it does not meet you with the repulsiveness the MMIA greets you with. Even the Eyadema airport in Togo has a better atmosphere. The Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport in Dakar, Senegal trumps ours by light years. This is speaking of African countries. We dare not try to compare with airports outside Africa. As soon as you descend from the plane to go through the immigration point, the feeling is as though you were being punished for daring to travel to Nigeria – if a foreigner – or you were being punished for daring to leave the country – if a Nigerian. The saddest part of this reality is that money is not the reason why we have an airport that makes us look like we are a people without shame. Or, are we?

There is a chance you are busy during the week. If you find time this Sunday, please pay a visit to the MMIA. Find your way to the Departure Hall. If it does not remind you of the old Oshodi in Lagos, I’d write an apology for everyone who says it doesn’t. Of course, there is a chance they quickly react to this piece to make a few cosmetic changes. If it looks better this Sunday because of this piece, just wait another four weeks; I can bet it will be back to its seamy self. Last Sunday, there were more touts than there were passengers inside the airport. The system is such that even getting your boarding pass to travel is made difficult so an incentive is created for you to engage one of the touts. I was approached to pay N5,000 to get my boarding pass. I wouldn’t pay because I just needed to see if I’d miss my flight despite arriving over three hours earlier. If that had happened, I’d have made sure the airline in question never gets to try it with anyone again. Where else could an anomaly like this happen? If you arrive the airport two hours before your flight, there is a chance you miss your flight not because that is not enough time before your flight but because somehow, someway, bottlenecks have been created to make you need touts to do what you’d do within minutes elsewhere. Nigeria is a nightmare!

If per chance you are wondering why one would dedicate a column to an airport of all the myriad of issues facing Nigeria, please have a rethink. The airport is an essential part of a country’s prestige and perception. Any country with a badly managed airport as ours is likely to be as badly managed as our country. If a country cannot manage its main airport, how can it manage anything else? Travelling through Section D 34 on Sunday and it was as though someone was increasing the heat as we were getting boiled. How much does it cost to make the air-conditioning systems work? What does it cost to make the airport clean enough? Why should we have people in queues for hours just to go through immigration and security checks? Why have more metal detectors if passengers are made to use just one or two on most occasions? Body scanners have been in use since 2007, how much does it cost to have them in our major airports? Why is Nigeria the only country where, to travel, you must have your box opened and ransacked by security men? What is the essence of running these same bags through electronic security? Why in the world can’t we get even the simplest of things right?

The first impression you get about a country upon visiting is its airport. There are people who intentionally run their flight connections through some airports just to make use of their facilities or make purchases. I know people who travel to other parts of the world but make sure to travel through Dubai simply because of the travel experience. I dare not start comparing our airports with Dubai’s because then I’d be comparing two things of different kinds. You will not find a Nigerian who has been outside of this country who is not ashamed of our airports. Of course, this does not include Nigerians who call things that do not exist as though they do; Nigerians who look at the poverty and gross unemployment and proclaim our lives are being transformed. You will not find a Nigerian who has the ability to face the truth who’d not admit shame at looking at our major airports. I was at the Addis Ababa airport last August when a Nigerian started lamenting behind me. She was shocked even Ethiopia could do better than the “giANT” of Africa. Giant ko, dwarf ni. We stay living in a delusion of grandeur that does not exist.

Having said all this, I will never be able to describe the pain and sadness that come with travelling from the MMIA. The only way you won’t feel this sadness is if you’ve gone past caring about this country or you are one of the reasons this country is so messed us as it is. The MMIA was modelled after Amsterdam’s Schipol. Over 40 years later, the MMIA is worse than it looked when the military government of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo remodelled it. Just look at Schipol airport today. If you dare compare both, tears will fill your eyes before you even get started.

Where then do we start? We can start by doing away with the touts inside the lobby. We can start by ensuring the air-conditioning systems work. We can look to make sure passengers are well-treated on arrival and departure. We always look at problems and immediately assume throwing money at them will solve them. I have since realised half the problems with Nigeria have nothing to do with money. Even with all the money in the world, our airports and our country will not work as long as we do not have people who care about excellence. Caring about excellence means knowing that Nigerians deserve the best all the time. When we reserve the rights citizens of other countries take for granted, upgrade such to privileges for our citizens, we will always miss the point of making things work. Nigerians deserve more but as long as we have people – including the President – dancing on national TV because a road contract has been awarded, we’d always have a situation where mediocrity will remain the norm. Would anyone say the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is the mess it is because of money? Nay. It is what it is because we are who we are. We have become a people accustomed to seeing nothing work.

It’d be great to see someone in authority do something about the mess that is the MMIA for starters. It’s a shame to Nigeria. But does Nigeria even understand what shame is? Does anyone really give a damn about the shame?

The Generic of A Metaphysics of the Mind. Pt. 2

The Mind: A Synoptic Bonus To The Field of Gnoseology.

Far from the regular tradings of the Philosophy of mind, the concept of Gnoseology as an ambience within scholaric discourse is an offshoot of a synopsis. This synopsis has its root in the marvels that triggered seeming interests on the extent at which the mind bears relevance within human struggle. The mind, yes, the mind is surreal.

There is no gainsaying that, much work has been carried out by scholars in the past. The many works in this area reflects a revolution in psychology that began mid-century, a period marked with radical scienticism and pro-behaviouralism. Before then, largely in reaction to traditional claims about the mind being non-physical a-la- Rene Descartes, many thought that a scientific psychology should avoid talk of ‘private’ mental states. Investigation of such states had seemed to be based on unreliable introspection, and not subject to independent checking. Consequently, psychologists like B.F Skinner and J.B. Watson, and philosophers like W.V Quine and Gilbert Ryle argued that scientific psychology should confine itself to studying publicly observable relations between stimuli and responses. This fact is avid in their works on Behaviourism, Methodological and scientific findings towards Behaviourism on an analytic front.

ASUU: FG To Give Varsities N1.1tn In Five years

The PUNCH gathered on Tuesday evening that a key component of the agreement reached by the parties was that the Federal Government would inject N1.1tn into public universities in the next five years.

A reliable source, who made this known, also hinted that the strike would be called off anytime next week.

He said the government team which was led by President Goodluck Jonathan would release N220bn yearly into the sector beginning from 2014.

The source added, “The meeting should be the longest that we have ever had on this crisis but I can tell you that both parties were frank all through the discussions.

“The parties also showed commitment towards ending the crisis. The President in particular showed that he was serious about ending the strike and that was why he offered to release over N1tn to the universities in the next five years.

“The money will be released on a yearly basis at N220bn per annum beginning from 2014. For the outgoing year, the government will only release N100bn and this has been processed.”

He said that the government, in order to show its commitment to a fresh pact, accepted that “the fund(N1.1tn) should domiciled at the Central Bank of Nigeria”

“The money will be released on a quarterly basis to the universities. So, there won’t be any problem about funding the deal,” the source said.

The National Universities Commission and the Trade Union Congress, according to him, will be the joint guarantors of the agreement while the Minister of Education will be the implementation officer.

The source also said that the government agreed among other things, to revamp the public universities by ensuring that all those issues that always led to strike were dealt with once and for all.

It was learnt that the negotiating team of ASUU led by Dr. Nassir Faggae met on Tuesday night to further deliberate on the deal.

Though the details of the meeting were not known as of 11.22pm on Tuesday, it was gathered that ASUU might call a National Executive Council meeting on or before Saturday where the deal would be tabled before all its branch executives.

Jonathan had while shaking hands with Fagge after the marathon meeting in the Presidential Villa, Abuja said, “My President, I hope it (strike) will end today(Tuesday). Our children have suffered enough. We must find a solution.”

All those in attendance responded with a loud “Amen.”

When greeting Omar, he said, “My President with you around, there will be no problem; our agreement is signed, sealed and delivered.”.

Faggae told State House correspondent on his way out of the Villa, that his team would take back a message to varsity teachers before a decision would be taken on the next line of action.

“We had a lengthy meeting with Mr. President, and we looked into how best to address the problem of university education in this country. We now have a message from Mr. President that we are going to take to our members and we are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to his message,” he said.

Fagge added that since the message was meant for members, he would not divulge it to the press.

When asked whether university teachers would be called upon to return to the classrooms, he said that the decision was left for them to take.

When further asked if he was impressed by the President’s message, Faggae cautioned journalists against putting words in his mouth, insisting that only ASUU members would determine that.

The Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, who listened to Faggae’s encounter with journalists, later said progress was made during the discussion.

He said, “We made progress. The President of ASUU told you that they are going back with a message from the Federal Government back to their members and the message is full of high expectation and hope.”

When asked whether ASUU would call off the strike, Wogu said that was why he described the message as full of expectation.

“Our prayer is that they will come back with positive outcome. They might even not come back to meet us. They might take decision there that will meet your expectations “ he said.

He added that the offers made by the government during the meeting were those that were in line with the contentious 2009 agreement.

He said since the issues that led to the strike bordered on the 2009 agreement, the government did not go beyond the pact.

The President was joined at the meeting that started at 2.40pm on Monday by Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim; the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike; Wogu among others.

Faggae led the union team which included past presidents such as Prof. Abdulahi Sule-Kano, Prof. Dipo Fashina and Prof. Festus Iyayi.

President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulawahid Omar and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Bobboi Kaigama, also attended.

Other members of the delegation were Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, Prof. Victor Osodeke, Prof. Suleiman Abdul, Dr. Victor Igbum and Mr. Michael Odunmoraye.

The marathon meeting was the first between ASUU and Jonathan since the strike started. The Presidency took over the negotiations with ASUU on September 19 with Sambo in charge.

The Generic of A Metaphysics of the Mind. Pt. 1

Introduction.

Within the parlance of most Satyric thinking, the doer of an action is the protagonist to which the case eventually is inferred from. This is often independent of whether or not, the necessary course of action is as should be or not. That the doer of the action is the igniter of the will, leaves more to answers and better yet, answers that leave so much to be desired. But, within common discuss; the one to which the action is done, is the one with the end result. That, in itself is the conditioning factor, the constant, upon which every consequence is factored.

BREAKING: MEND Stakes Claim For Warri Refinery Fire Outbreak.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) says it is responsible for “the sabotage” today at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Refinery in Warri, Delta State. The facility was ravaged by fire.

According to MEND in a statement, ‘Hurricane Exodus’ was intended to burn down the entire refining refinery.

“As long as President Goodluck Jonathan continues to rely on an unsustainable and fraudulent Niger Delta Amnesty programme, peace and security will continue to elude his government in the region,” it said, adding, “‘Hurricane Exodus’ is on course!’”

REMARK.
We now know those enjoying Nigeria's continued importation of refined products .. Jonathan has been one of the most unfortunate President in Human history plagued by sabotage from his enemies, friends, brother, Ministers , wife and a very low IQ . I sympathise with him!

Of ASUU & The Rejection of N600 Billion FG Offer.

Varsity teachers remained adamant last night, saying their strike would go on, despite the government’s shifting of its position. The strike has been on for four months.

More cash has been pledged for projects on the campuses. Besides, the earned allowances due to the teachers have been increased from the initial N30 billion offer, which the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) rejected. The teachers are insisting on the 2009 agreement, which they say President Goodluck Jonathan was part of. Besides, they say, they do not trust the government.

NEWS: Alleged Plot To Kidnap Amaechi Uncovered. Just How?

A plot allegedly directed at forcing Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State out of office in a way former Governor Chris Ngige of Anambra State was subjected to in 2003 was unveiled, yesterday.
The plot, allegedly aimed at forcing Amaechi out of office through blackmail while being kept incommunicado, it was claimed yesterday, would also involve family members of the embattled governor as co-conspirators.

What Success At Ones Place Of Work Involves.

There are an endless amount of characters in the workplace.

There’s the lady you find in the break room, always on a diet and commenting on your weight (God help you if you are proportionate, she will eat you alive). The guy who shows off way too many baby pictures of his not-that-cute-kid. The girl who stays in her office with the door shut, even during fire drills. And the dreaded over-talker who never gets the hint (which might explain why that one girl stays in her office).

We all play roles in our workplaces, many of which are unique to only our office. But there’s a standard cast of characters as well. You can find varieties of them anywhere you go, but they all share the same skill sets. They are the ones who will succeed and the ones who will fail.

In lieu of filling you with fluffy “this is what a successful person looks like” talk, I thought I’d take the opposite route. The following is a list of people who stand out for all the wrong reasons. Fair warning: If you don’t know who this person is at your office, it might be you.

1. The Gullible One.

If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that you should never believe everything a company says. Don’t believe them when they say they don’t expect layoffs (the mere mention of that word suggests they’re on the way). Don’t believe that they’ve offered you the highest salary they can. Don’t believe them when they say they can’t negotiate your raise. And definitely don’t believe them when they say “this year has been really bad, but next year you’re going to get hooked up on that promotion you want!”

When a boss, HR rep or recruiter (or anyone playing a role in your career and financial success) states something that makes you tilt your head to the side and think “huh…that seems sketch,” don’t just accept it.

As I’ve said before, the car dealer will act like he can’t budge on a number. But if you stand up and start walking to the door he’ll automatically find a discount for you. Companies are in it for the bottom line even when they’re negotiating things with their employees. They want to encourage you to stick around while also finding a way to save money. And it saves them money to give you a smaller raise, to skip a round of promotions, to make you work through Christmas. Don’t fall for it.

2. The Groupthinker.

Groupthink is a psychological problem that runs rampant in workplaces. Even more if you’ve got a large population of “longtermers” in a corporation. Groupthink is why technology isn’t updated, why policies are outdated, why there’s no new blood (or ideas) on a team, why you hear the sentence “you can’t do that, that’s not how we’ve always done it!”

It’s easy to spot these people, especially if you’re new to a company. They sit in clumps together and they make bizarre statements in meetings, they do the same things every day and they complain when their life is disrupted by something (or someone) new.

If you fight against a mass of groupthinkers, you run a high risk of failure, persecution, derailment and tons of frustration. But if you engage and join them, you will become silly and possibly unmarketable for your next career jump. Take your pick.

3. The Fearful One.

People do ridiculous things when they’re scared. Just ask anyone who’s died in a horror movie (I mean, who drops the phone and runs up the stairs?!).

Fearful people will cause you serious amounts of trouble at work. If they’re scared of getting fired, they will find a way to point a finger at you. If their project is failing, they will suggest your role was to blame. Drowning people will grab whatever they can to keep their head above water. Don’t stand too close and become that object.

And don’t become the drowning person. If you ever feel worried about something at work, you sense something bad coming your way or you screw up big time, avoid the fear by taking some action. Talk to someone, your boss, your mentor or a peer to get information that will quell your fears. Or fess up and find out immediately what repercussions are headed your way for the screw-up so you’re not worried about the unknowns. Do whatever you need to do in order to avoid becoming the fearful one.

4. Apathetic Guy.

The other day, a friend of mine posted a message on Facebook FB +3.3% stating her frustration that people keep calling her upcoming maternity leave a “vacation.” She mentioned a litany of things that have to be done while you’re on maternity leave (none of it sounded remotely vacation’ish). She referenced this because she felt judged and persecuted for her decision to take the time off.

Consider now the single person. If you haven’t been in this demo for awhile, you might not be aware of this, but single people are also victims of workplace apathy. I’ve actually heard the sentence, “You can stay late tonight to finish this, right? I gotta get out of here and it’s not like you’re going home to a family.”

Everyone is dealing with something. Everyone feels judged and misunderstood every once in awhile. And everyone feels the sting from these moments. Show some compassion even when you’re having trouble putting yourself in their shoes.

Don’t be the apathetic coworker. The grass isn’t always greener, even though it may appear so.

5. The Sore Loser.

Anytime you’re successful or experience something great in life or your career, I guarantee you that someone somewhere will doubt that you earned it the good ‘ol hard-working way. That someone somewhere is the sore loser.

A sore loser will think you got that deal because you’ve got an important last name. Or that you were hired because your Mom sits in the corner office. Or that you simply got lucky (literally and figuratively).

You can’t stop a sore loser from thinking what they want and you can’t convince them out of their opinion. The only way to battle a sore loser is to make sure they’re not right (it might surprise some of you ladies that yes, business can indeed be conducted outside the bedroom!).

Update: It’s been called to my attention by several female readers that the comment above was offensive and diminishes the hard-earned success of females in the workplace. I realize now it was a poor example and misrepresented the very reason I have this column. It wasn’t my goal to suggest that women are perpetuating a Mad Men-era stereotype and that men are absolved of their roles in these scenarios. While it exists, this in fact is NOT a common problem in the workplace. I mentioned it as merely a side note to emphasize the importance in making sure “Sore Losers” are not making accurate accusations by carrying yourself properly in the workplace.

Use your connections and your network to get ahead, but do your own dang work. Show results. Then the sore losers will disappear one by one.

6. Malicious Gossiper.

There’s harmless gossip and then there’s malicious gossip. Harmless gossip is…harmless. But you must avoid the malicious gossiper completely. In fact, put large amounts of space between you and this person.

Assume that since they’re willing to share really bad information with you, they’re sharing it with other people. They’re kind of like the flu.

If you run across a malicious gossiper and they start talking, whatever you do, don’t agree with them. Because the next thing you know, your sentence of “Oh, I agree with you – I bet she totally slept with that guy to get that job” will be shortened to “So and so just told me that so and so slept with so and so!” And voila, you’re screwed.

7. The Apologizer.

I recently attended an event where several startups were invited to pitch. One woman stood up to sell her idea to a room undoubtedly full of millions, a big opportunity for a small company. She looked sharp and ready. But then she opened with, “Don’t worry, this isn’t a crappy website that does blah…”

Well shoot. For the remainder of her presentation, I assumed her website was crappy.

The Apologizer will discredit themselves as soon as they open their mouth. They will start a presentation with qualifying statements like the one above or they will ask for a raise by saying, “I know we don’t have a lot of money, but…” They lose these deals because they show a massive lack of confidence in the statement, regardless of topic.

You don’t necessarily have to avoid this person. Just don’t be this person. The company pays you a salary because they think you’re worth it. You have every right to be in the room and to be having that conversation right then. Why act like you don’t belong there?

Repeat the following statement as many times as you need to before you have an important conversation or make a presentation: Be confident, not cocky.

Truth Meets Truth: 701,000 People Are Enslaved In Nigeria -Survey

To every action they say (so to say in science), there comes equal and opposite reaction. This truism is of common knowledge when the subject of this article is taken into clear perspective. How right can this claim be? The cynics and optimists must really come hard with counter-claims that are sufficient to pass this assertion as would be earmarked further, worthy of a place in the bin.

Now, some 30 million people are enslaved worldwide, trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labour, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude, a global index on modern slavery showed on Thursday.

Food for Thoughts.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT:
On his death bed, Alexander summoned his generals and told them his 3 ultimate wishes:

1. The best doctors should carry his coffin;

2. The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery, and

3. His hands should be let loose, hanging outside the coffin for all to see.

One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain.

Here is what Alexander the Great had to say:

1. I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that, in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal.

2. I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, stays on earth.

3. I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world
empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is TIME..

Politics: Akpabio A Loud-mouthed Gov. Paying The Price Of Loyalty

His names are Godswill Obot Akpabio. He is the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria. To many of his admirers, he is the golden governor, who has turned a once sedentary state into a wonderland of a sort. The land of beauty. The land of pride. The city that works for the people, and other Nigerians.

But, to his adversaries, the Akwa Ibom helmsman is the sweet-talking, 'loud-mouthed' governor, who never gets tired of advertising his achievements and dramatic turn-around of his state.

It Happened In Kenya, Where is Next?

Humans have been trolling the earth ever since the biological coming together of the universe. Trolling within the context of my usage herein is in the positive light, but it draws a negative shame, when the true accounts of man's parade through his tussles and quest to make relevance on the earth is place to question. Humans know better to be upright in their dealings and interractions from all angles, yet, the reverse is almost the case.

The events across the world over the last couple of decades is crippling albeit terrifying. That the things that went down during the course of recent history actually were the case leaves so much to be desired. Many questions will be asked, many have been asked before now; and more will go down, just as accounts taken can not all be answered, but the common factor is that, man has been his own worst enemy. Each one of us has evolved over time to be a bane to others and this has threatened the collective scrutiny of every bid we can make at forging a decent world, one which we can call home. How bad things have become!

And He's Back TO School: Stowaway Kid, Daniel Ohikhena Resumes With Security Men

When 13-year-old Daniel Oikhena hid in the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik plane on August 24, little did he know he was going to become a hero.

However, luck smiled on Daniel after a safe landing and he became the boy of the moment.

Daniel’s mother, Evelyn, had earlier disclosed that her son had wanted to be a pilot.

Since the incident, seeing Daniel now is like forcing the carmel through the eye of a needle.

Pastor Ajanaku Confirmed Dead, Was An Occultist, posted by olagideon

The news making wave around that Pastor Ireti Ajanaku resurrected may after all be lies as a contrary report from Gazelle news has it that the pastor is confirmed dead, and that the Oro traditional worshipers have already incredibly conducted a funeral rite for the late pastor.
The Report according to Gazelle News has it as thus: It may sound incredible but it is true. The late founder and spiritual leader of the Christ Revival Victory Chapel International, Pastor Elijah Iretiola Ajanaku, might have belong to the Oro cult in his lifetime.
Residents of Ikola Odunsi, where Ajanaku lived before he breathed his last on Saturday evening at Gbongan in Osun State, were surprised early Tuesday morning when Oro masquerades went to town in funeral rites for the departed 'Pastor'.
The funeral rites which began at about
12.30am ended between 3 and 4am.
The Oro worshippers chanted the name of Ajanaku throughout the night. The worshippers marched through the streets of Ikola Odunsi, Ikola Gbenaje, and landed at the deceased's street, Folarin Williams Close.
They were chanting, "Ajanaku lo, o di gbere", meaning "Ajanaku is gone forever, adieu".

Senator Ahmed Yerima On Child Marriage: “Maturity Is Determined By A Girl’s Parents”,posted by olagideon

Senator Ahmed Yerima was interviewed on Channels TV yesterday to shed light on why he is in support of child marriage.
The embattled senator is astonished by the outrage of Nigerians towards his belief that even young girls are fit for marriage.According to him, a girl is ready for marriage whenever her parents deem it fit.
He stood his ground even while being grilled by the show presenter and added the little titbit that his own teenage daughter is set to be married this year.

Heart specialists claim they will soon be able to bring dead back to life.,posted by olagideon

Medical advances mean it will soon be possible to bring the dead back to life, a doctor claims.
Modern techniques will enable a patient to be revived up to 24 hours after they stop breathing, Dr Sam Parnia says.
The American critical care physician, who trained in London, said: 'We may soon be rescuing people from death's clutches hours, or even longer, after they have actually died.' He claims the US actor James Gandolfini, star of The Sopranos – who died aged 51 in Rome
last month – might have survived if he had suffered his massive heart attack in New York.
'I believe if he died here, he could still be alive. We'd cool him down, pump oxygen to the tissues, which prevents them from dying,' Dr Parnia told Germany's Der Spiegel magazine.
'Clinically dead, he could then be cared for by the cardiologist. He would make an angiogram, find the clot, take it out, put in a stent and we would restart the heart.' Dr Parnia, whose new book on resuscitation science is called Erasing Death, said death should be reversible for many patients, providing they are in the right place getting the right treatment.
'Of course we can't rescue everybody and many people with heart attacks have other major problems,' he said. 'But if all the latest medical technologies and training had been implemented, which clearly hasn't been done, then in principle the only people who should die
and stay dead are those that have an
underlying condition that is untreatable.
'A heart attack is treatable. Blood loss as well. A terminal cancer isn't, neither are many infections with multiresistant pathogens. In these cases, even if we'd restart the heart, it would stop again and again.
'My basic message: The death we commonly perceive today in 2013 is a death that can be reversed.' Dr Parnia, head of intensive care at the Stony Brook University Hospital in New
York, said resuscitation figures tell their own story.
The average resuscitation rate for cardiac arrest patients is 18 per cent in US hospitals and 16 per cent in Britain. But at his hospital it is 33 per cent – and the rate peaked at 38 per cent earlier this year. 'Most, but not all of our patients, get discharged with no neurological damage whatsoever,' he said, adding that it is a 'widely
held misconception' – even among doctors – that the brain begins to suffer massive damage from oxygen deprivation three to five minutes after the heart stops.
'In the past decade we have seen tremendous progress. With today's medicine, we can bring people back to life up to one, maybe two hours,
sometimes even longer, after their heart
stopped beating and they have thus died by circulatory failure. 'In the future, we will likely get better at reversing death.'
The techniques he advocates are not
cryogenics – freezing the body immediately after death – but cooling it down to best preserve brain cells while keeping up the level of oxygen in the blood. This buys time to fix
the underlying problem and restart the heart, he claims. He says that if someone collapses with a heart attack, call 999 then immediately place bags of frozen vegetables on them until the ambulance arrives, as it helps protect the brain.
'It is possible that in 20 years, we may be able to restore people to life 12 hours or maybe even 24 hours after they have died.
'You could call that resurrection, if you will. But I still call it resuscitation science.

Why would the Federal Government of Nigeria start a coal power plant to produce electricity in Nigeria??,posted by olagideon

Please read this..

Coal ash contains uranium.
Thus, coal stations emit radiation as
nuclear power plants do.
However, coal stations actually emit
more radiation than a nuclear power plant.
Now, nuclear power plants are dangerous, but so are coal plants, petrol repositories, fossil-fuel burning, and wind turbines.
This is ironic, because people get freaked out more by the idea of nuclear power plants, and not coal plants. Research has found that coal fired power stations expose us to higher radiation doses than nuclear power plants do. So, statistically looking at
actual death rates of different electricity sources we see some interesting things.
For instance, oil, lignite, and coal have the highest death rates. They are followed by peat and biomass power. Nuclear and wind energy are the best power sources when viewing death rates and hydroelectricity is the optimal type of power source in some countries. Many people are extremely anti- nuclear power plants, though, due to the big, notable accidents that have occurred. Still,
proponents of nuclear power claim it's one of the safest ways to get energy.

Femi Fani-kayode - A Word For Those That Call Me An Igbo Hater

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Former Minister
Those that call me a tribalist and an igbo-hater are simply misguided and ignorant. Perhaps they do not know the meaning of those words or the true import of their meaning. Those that know me well like you can confirm the fact that I am not a racist or a bigot and that I consider such sentiments as being unworthy of a man of class, good breeding and culture. I am however a firm believer in the propagation of truth and I, like you, appreciate the value and importance of history. Sadly many of our igbo brothers and sisters do not believe in that. History for them consists of only one thing-how other Nigerians have always marginalised them and treated them badly.

Nigeria Is Cursed- OBJ

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has delivered what appears his most cynical but candid appraisal of Nigeria yet, speaking on Tuesday of a "cursed and jinxed" nation in a speech that also openly criticised his ex-deputy, Atiku Abubakar, and former governor of Lagos State, Bolq Tinubu, as "failed and corrupt".

Obasanjo said Nigeria was probably "cursed and jinxed" since the country has for 53 years endured the misfortune of bad leaders, with none worthy of the commendation of Nigerians.

"The whole thing is not just about leadership," he said. "If we talk about good leadership, you should also talk about good followers. If you talk about human right, you should also talk about human duties and obligations. It is sad that after 53 years of independence, we have no leader that we can commend. The problem in Africa is that when one person takes over, he would not see any good thing that his predecessor did. Let us condemn but with caution."

He said if Nigerians were yet to commend a leader after 53 years of independence, "then we are jinxed and cursed; we should all go to hell."

Obasanjo made the remarks in a keynote address at the 4th Annual Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit, organised by Centre for Sustainable Development, University of Ibadan, in collaboration with African Sustainable Development Network.

He categorised Atiku Abubakar, who worked with him for eight years, and Tinubu, as amongst the new generation of leaders who failed Nigerians because of corruption.

He also listed former governors of Bayelsa, Edo and Delta states, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, Lucky Igbinedion, and James Ibori respectively, in that category.

"We had some people who were under 50 years in leadership positions," he said. "One of them was James Ibori, where is he today? One of them was Alamieyeseigha, where is he today? Lucky Igbinedion, where is he today? The youngest was the Speaker, (Salisu) Buhari; you can still recall what happened to him. You said Bola Tinubu is your master. What Buhari did was not anything worse than what Bola Tinubu did.

We got them impeached. But in this part of the world, some people covered up the other man. The man claimed he went to Government College, Ibadan, but the governor (Oyo State) went to Government College and packed all the documents so that they would not know that he did not go there. I wanted someone who would succeed me so I took Atiku. Within a year, I started seeing the type of man Atiku is. And you want me to get him there?"

Salisu is the former speaker of the House of Representatives who was removed from office for forging his academic certificates and claiming he attended the University of Toronto.

Alamieyeseigha was impeached and convicted for money laundering, while Igbinedion is also an ex-convict for same offense. Ibori is currently serving a jail term in UK prison for the same crime.

Obasanjo said only a little fraction of the younger generation of Nigerians criticising the current leadership, are themselves, better.

"Some of you who are condemning the leadership would get there tomorrow and it will be a different story. Only very few are actually good," he said

FOOTNOTE
Pot calling kettle black is the right phrase to describe Obasanjo. Obasanjo is also a thief and deserves to die either by hanging or drowning.

Obasanjo stole $17 billion dollars meant for electricity. He was the President and Petroleum Minsiter for eight years. He sold TranCorp to himself and cronies. The list is endless.........

He almost truncated the democratic setting by trying to go for third term. Baba Ole!

Doctors have studied Nong Youhui's amazing eyesight when his dad took him to hospital in Dahua, southern China, concerned over his bright blue eyes.

Sen. Bukola Saraki Arraigned By EFCC For Fraud

Former Governo Bukola Saraki of Kwara State, currently a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is facing a massive interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja.

The former governor turned himself today after returning from a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Upon his return he drove himself to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja and turned himself in just several hours ago.

Having contacted EFCC operatives and they confirmed that the former governor was still in interrogation and they did not whether he would be released by tonight.

The interrogation is related to allegations of massive fraud that attended his tenure as governor for 8 years in Kwara State.

It has been alleged that he has been receiving 100 million naira monthly as an illegal pension from the current government of Kwara state.

The fraud & illegal pension was first detected at First City Merchant Bank in Lagos.

Footnote:
This is all about arm twisting for delegate votes in Kwara State. The current Kwara state governor is put there by Saraki. The current governor is willing to give the delegates to a northerner which Jonathan needs. Saraki must fall in line or else.

Mrs. Beyonce Carter Gets Her hair cut. HIT OR MISS?

Beautiful wife of star US rapper, Jay Z was seen pictured recently with a trim hair garnished with exotic colour polish. She sparks a glorious one there if you ask me.

Well Beyonce has continued to have influence on millions of ladies all over the world and Kenya has been no exception. A while back when she stepped out with box braids tied in a high bun, the trend spread like wild fire on our Nairobi streets.

Wizkid lose N12milliion Star Trek performance deal due to Greed, posted by olagideon

While it is no longer news, that Star Boy, Ayo
'Wizkid' Balogun, will not be headlining this
year's edition of the annual Nigerian Breweries
PLC sponsored musical concert roadshow, Star
Trek, the main reason why the artiste was
dropped has been revealed.
Inside sources privy to how the recruitment
and negotiation of fee for artistes for the
concert are conducted said that the inability
of the organisers and WizKid's managers to
agree on performance fee led to the musician's
absence from the oldest musical concert in the
country.
The source said that WizKid was offered N3
million per show and allotted four shows which
would have seen him pocket a grand sum of
N12 million but his managers allegedly turned
it down on the grounds that it was too small
for the highflying artiste. The original aim of
turning the offer down according to our
source, "was to force the organisers to
increase the amount to N5 million per show.
However, the marketing strategy backfired as
Nigerian Breweries' management called the
bluff of the musician and his managers and
replaced him with two other musicians for less
the amount offered WizKid." It was further
revealed that when it dawned on WizKid that
the organisers were not ready to add a dime
to the N3 million offered him per show.
He ran back to the Iganmu, the headquarters
of the Lagos-based alcoholic drink brewers,
this time, through long time mentor, Banky W.
On getting there, Wizzy was told that he had
been replaced by two other artistes and
should try his luck next year.

Word on the street

Today is the 5th day of August and on this day we remember the victims of the Aluu community killing, UNIPORT students - Tekena Elkanah, Ugonna Obuzor, Chiadika Biringa, and Lloyd Michael which happened on October 5, 2012.

We pray their dear souls continue to rest in peace and God give strength and grace to all those left behind to mourn them.

Here is an update on the matter:

The murder trial of four male undergraduate students of the University of Portharcourt, who were lynched by a mob in Aluu community in Rivers State, last year, resumed on August 1, 2013 at the Port Harcourt high court.

Justice L L Nyoordee adjourned the matter till August 15 for hearing on the bail applications filed by the counsels representing the 12 persons accused of killing the students. The judge adjourned the matter after the counsels announced the bail applications for their clients.

All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Solicitor General of Rivers State, Rufus Godwin brought an amended charge including one more person accused of murder in the case which was opposed by the defense counsels. One of counsels to the accused, Kennedy Amos told our correspondent that the case has resumed properly following the plea by the accused and the bail application by the defense counsels.

Meanwhile, the women of Okirika staged a protest at the state
High court in Port Harcourt, on August 1, over the delayed trial of the 12 persons accused of the murder of their two sons in the incident. Leader of the women, who were dressed in black with placards, Gift Amangi, said the women are calling for justice and speedy dispensation of justice.

Kenyan Lawyer sues Israel, Italy over killing of Jesus

A Kenyan lawyer has filed a petition with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, suggesting that the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ was unlawful, and The State of Israel among others should be held responsible.

Dola Indidis, a lawyer and former spokesman of the Kenyan Judiciary is reportedly attempting to sue Tiberius (Emperor of Rome 42 BC-37AD), Pontius Pilate, a selection of Jewish elders, King Herod, the Republic of Italy and the State of Israel.

"Evidence today is on record in the Bible, and you cannot discredit the Bible," Indidis said. Even though those he suggests should have been convicted during the original trial have not been alive for more than 2000 years, Indidis insists that the government for whom they acted can and should still be held responsible. "I filed the case because it's my duty to uphold the dignity of Jesus and I have gone to the ICJ to seek justice for the man from Nazareth.

No Computers, No Uniforms: The Sorry State of Nigeria Police, posted by olagideon

NASS Member With His Feet Up On A Chair During Recess

How things turn out to be, when all that men do are things of flare and unseriousness. Else, how can one explain this picture?

To say it the way it is, it equals to Idiocy at its peak, even in the full glare of the camera! Well, you know what it is; Nigeria is one big land of jokers.

Well, what more do we expect of a member of the Nigeria national assembly, when all they do there is deliberate over money to be shared and child marriage. Bunch of perverts!

Question of the Evening: Is Gareth Bale Worth £130?

When we talk of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, it is believed that no other player in the world is of the same calibre. But this past season, Gareth Bale at Tottenham has proved otherwise.

The Welshman has had an absolutely sensational 2012/13 campaign. He has not only been scoring a lot of goals, but has also developed his game in a variety of ways.

Bale joined Spurs in 2007 from Southampton for a fee of £7m.

The 2012/13 season began with Tottenham challenging for the Champions League spot. Bale proved to be extremely important in Spurs living up to their ability.

The Wales international has scored 26 goals and picked up eight assists in all competitions this season and has rightfully been named as the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year - and also the Football Writers' Player of the Year.

It's going to take a word-record fee for Real Madrid to prise Gareth Bale away from Tottenham but is the winger really worth £100million?

Real Madrid think so. They think it would be money well spent but some analysts disagree with the Spanish giants.

What about you? Do you think Bale is worth £85m. Yes or No?

Music video director Aswad Ayinde jailed 90 yrs for fathering 6 kids with his own daughters ,written by olagideon

Music video director Aswad Ayinde, 55, who
won an MTV award for directing The Fugees'
'Killing Me Softly' in 1996, has been
sentenced to 90 years in prison for
repeatedly raping his six daughters and
fathering six children with them. *spits out*
how disgusting is this guy?
Aswad Ayinde is accused of raping his
daughters to create a "pure" bloodline,
fathered six kids with them from the
mid-1980s to 2002 – and delivered the
babies himself, the court heard during his
trial last Friday
"He said the world was going to end, and it
was just going to be him and his offspring
and that he was chosen," his ex-wife,
Beverly Ayinde testified at a pre-trial
hearing.
Prosecutors said Ayinde kept the kids from
blabbing about the rape by beating them and
isolating them from other children. All his
daughters were home schooled.
"I was afraid to ever accuse him of being
demented or being a pedophile," Beverly
Ayinde, who had 9 children with him told
the court. "I knew the word, but I wouldn't
dare use it because it would result in a
beating."
Prosecutors revealed that Mr. Ayinde began
having sex with his second daughter from the
time she eight-years-old, impregnating her
four times. He faces three more trials over
the alleged assaults.

Nigerian wins right to stay in the UK,written by olagideon

A Nigerian woman, Roseline Akhalu, who was
facing deportation by the UK government
has finally won the right to stay in the UK.
In 2004, Akhalu moved to Leeds to study,
where she was later diagnosed with kidney
failure. She had a kidney transplant in 2009
and gained her stay based on the fact that
immunosuppressant drugs are not easily
accessible in Nigeria.
She said, "I will die if deported to Nigeria
because I would have no access to
immunosuppressant drugs."
The campaign for Akhalu to remain in
Yorkshire received overwhelming worldwide
support, with British actor Colin Firth said
to have also campaigned for her stay in the
UK.

Did Spanish Train Crash Driver Make Speed Boast on Facebook?,written by olagideon

On Wednesday, at 8.41 p.m. local time, a
train derailed and crashed near the
northwestern Spanish city of Santiago de
Compostela, leaving 80 people dead and 31
critically injured.
Months before the tragic crash, the driver
of the train, Francisco Jose Garzón Amo, 52,
allegedly boasted of traveling at high speeds
on his Facebook page, according to multiple
media sources who saw his account, which is
now deleted.

The train, which was coming from the capital
Madrid, derailed at 180 kilometers per hour
(111 mph) in a sector where the speed limit is
just 80 (50 mph), according to Spanish
leading newspaper El Pais. It was going so
fast that one car flew 50 feet away from
the tracks. A video taken from a railway
security camera, and embedded above, shows
the moment of the fatal crash. (Warning: the
images might be disturbing for some
viewers.)
According to another publication, El Mundo,
on March 2012, Garzón also posted a picture
of a speedometer at 200 kph (124 mph.) You
can see a zoomed in screenshots in this video.
After one of his friend wrote: "Whoa you are
going so fast, braaaaaaake," Garzón replied
that "If I went any faster, they'd fine me,"
before adding that "the speedometer isn't
manipulated."
His friend made a reference to speeding and
how he'd lose the points on his driver's
license, to which Garzón responded in all
caps: "How fun it would be to drive side-by-
side the police and then pass them by,
triggering the speed radar. Haha, bit of a
fine for [train operator] Renfe, ha ha,"
according to the report.
Garzón, who had 30 years of experience, is
now under investigation. He had started
operating the train just 60 miles before the
crash, and tests performed after the crash
reported that he wasn't under the influence
of alcohol, as reported by El Pais.

EXPOSED! See The Real Reasons Tonto Dikeh And Mercy Johnson Are Quarreling Seriously, written by olagideon

The battle going on between these two
controversial actresses, Mercy Johnson and
Tonto Dikeh is not new to you, but many do
not really know the cause of this brouhaha.
We gathered that Tonto was enjoying the
best of her time when Mercy got married
and later got pregnant, reason being that,
she became a hot cake that producers
request for in and out of Lagos. Mercy's
short absence created enormous wealth for
her and she was really feeding hard on that.
Now, Mercy is fit and active to return to her
groove, Tonto, people in the know, got
threatened by that and she became so
agitated, went on social media to ridicule the
mother of one, Mercy.
"Tonto has never liked Mercy. Starting from
when Nollywood started shifting ground to
Asaba, Mercy was always in hot demand,
which obviously made Tonto to begin seeing
her as a competitor. This, among other things
combined to make them impenitent enemies,"
the source, who is a stakeholder in the
industry disclosed.
Only God knows what will result to this fight.
Meanwhile, the return of Mercy Johnson is
causing a lot of stir in Nollywood as all the
actresses are seeing it as a threat just like
Tonto Dikeh.
