The title of this essay must appear strange to most readers. The FCT
minister, Nasir el-Rufai, has never, to my knowledge, declared that he
was going to "launch" the shari'ah in his territory. Non-Muslims in
the FCT have never had cause to feel threatened by his administration.
If anything, he recently ordered the demolition of places of worship,
including (sacrilege of sacrileges!) mosques, for the minor and
inconsequential oversight of the builders in not obtaining appropriate
authority for their structures. A man who can actually demolish a
"house of God" cannot be in any one's books a believer.
El-Rufai , Nigeria 's brilliant FCT minister, has a reputation for
controversy. At BPE, if it was not the fight with those who misled the
investors in AP, then it was his public and acrimonious altercation
with the raving beauty of the cabinet, Mrs Kema Chikwe. The first
month he became minister he was embroiled in controversy with the
leadership of the Senate, over his assertion that he had been asked
for a bribe to "smoothen" his confirmation by the upper house. He next
proceeded to demolish the houses and other properties of
well-connected, eminent(!) citizens that were at variance with the
approved master plan of the FCT. In this crusade not even churches,
and not even mosques, were spared. Of recent, he has introduced
measures aimed at making sure that all scams involving land allocation
at FCT are exposed by revoking certificates of occupancy and demanding
all land-owners to go through a screening process leading to
re-certification.
But to dismiss Nasir as being "controversial", as many are wont to do,
is a disastrous mistake. First of all, in spite of the fact that he
has ruffled a quite few feathers (including many ostrich feathers),
his actions have been met with the quiet approval of the majority of
Nigerian society. What is termed controversial is in fact a stubborn
desire to be different, not just for its sake, but for the sake of
making a difference, a small positive contribution to a system in need
of change. Without growing a long beard and wearing a turban, without
shouting Allahu Akbar at every mundane and hypocritical political
rally, e-Rufai has set the pace of letting actions speak louder than
words, and being guided by conscience in the conduct of public trust.
He did not have to do that. He could, like many before (and around
him), have continued with business as usual. He could have negotiated
a settlement with rich house owners, spared their houses in return for
a payoff. He could have ridden on the wave of corruption in land
matters at the FCT and allocated plots to himself or his proxies, or
even sold prime land for a large personal fortune. Hew could have done
all this, while blowing his siren everyday to announce that he is
going to mosque, and making inflammatory statements as proof of his
loyalty and commitment to the Muslim ummah. He could have demolished
churches, and found an excuse for not demolishing mosques. He could
have stolen money and paid for the ulama in his town to go to Mecca on
hajj and umrah, or, in the case of the younger, smarter, more
materialistic Wahhabi types, given them some nice corner plots to sell
for a few million naira. He could spend his time mouthing
nonsensicalities about the dress code of women or other matters of
personal morality, while conducting public trust himself in the most
immoral manner.
He could, like many Nigerians, have shivered at the thought of
engaging powerful men and women-including uniformed officers and those
in retirement- in conflict. He could have thought of the need to be
careful, to protect his life and that of his family, from those who
would stop at nothing to protect what they have amassed at the expense
of the public. He chose not to. He opted for the difficult path of
confronting, head-on, a national malady, of risking everything in the
name of his conscience and his country. No one can say if el-Rufai
will last long in government if he continues like this. No one can
tell which powerful toe he will step on that will kick him out of
office. But if that happens, and when it happens, at least we will
know he stepped on a toe, something that we, as Nigerians, have been
too timid to even try.
I do not agree with everything Nasir has done or said. I certainly do
not share his complete confidence in market forces, or at least the
bit of it I saw on display when he was at the BPE. My own development
as an economist was mixed with an orientation and affinity to Marxian
political economy. I therefore have a healthy skepticism for market
forces and find myself ideologically opposed to the monetarism of
Milton Friedman and the Chicago school. This means I probably will
find much to question in economic thinking of Nasir and his close
friends in the Ministry of Finance and the Central bank. But while I
disagree with him on some points, I respect him and also find many
areas of common vision.
Nasir's courage, and principle, are refreshing for many reasons. One
reason is that for those who have lost hope in Nigeria the message is
that not all hope is lost. Along with the Minister of Finance and the
Minister of Information, Nasir is one of a handful of cabinet
appointments made by Obasanjo since he came to power in 1999 that
Nigerians can be truly proud of. Practically every other cabinet
appointment, starting from his choice of running mate, was an
unmitigated disaster. One or two potentially good hands did not last
at all because they would not play ball. The point here is that we now
know there is still hope.
But there is also freshness in the absence of hypocritical
moralization and pretence of religious fervour. We live in a country
reputed to be the most religious in the world. We have Muslim
fundamentalists of all shades and sects, and evangelical, born-again
Christians and prosperity churches. Our churches and mosques are full
of worshippers. Our roads are blocked on Fridays and Sundays by those
who have parked their cars and blocked the road for those who do not
worship God in their own church or mosque, or who worship Him at a
different time in a different manner, or even those who choose, as is
their right to, not to worship Him at all. The worshippers at the
redeemed camp, on the Lagos–Ibadan expressway, make the road
impassable when they go for camping and night vigil.
Yet Nigeria is the most corrupt nation in the world. We are known for
the plunder of public funds, for economic and financial crime, for
drug trafficking and counterfeiting and forgery. There is no security
of life and property. As more Nigerians sink into poverty, religious
leaders are coming out of it and prospering. Obviously if the God we
say we worship is as we say He is, it is not He that we worship if
this is our character. Our president spoke to God and he contested
elections based on this personal conversation. There was no witness
but we will take his word that, at least someone who he believes to be
God spoke to him. One of his special assistants, a pastor with a
history of drug addiction, insists that the president is anointed of
God and threatens fire and brimstone and God's wrath on all who dare
criticize the messiah. Muslim politicians, particularly at state
level, have become religious demagogues. At every forum now Allah's
name is invoked, the shari'ah is referred to, and there is this big
competition to prove commitment to the faith.
In all this, we have done a great disservice to God and religion. By
dragging both into the murky waters of our politics, by mentioning God
at every trivial opportunity, by reducing religious symbols to
political jargon and propaganda instruments, we have desacralised that
which was holy, tarnished that which was pure, and lowered that which
was exalted. Religious scholars have become contractors and political
opportunists. This is not new of course. It is an old insight, going
back at least to Gramsci's Prison Notes, that the religious(and
traditional) establishment is often co-opted by political society as
an active element in the persuasive machinery of the hegemonic state.
This is why, for many of us, the emergence of overtly political
religious movements of the Christian right and Muslim fringe, was
always viewed with suspicion as a threat to our corporate existence as
a polity.
In all the years of shouting religion, most of these politicians have
continued to steal, to lie, to cheat, and to give and receive bribes
with impunity. This is why it is those like Nasir, who make no claims
but act in a manner that is consistent with honour and good
conscience-it is to leaders like him that Muslims should turn for
direction. While those who claim to be the guardians of religion are
busy selling it and desecrating it, those they condemn as irreligious
are restoring its dignity while distancing it from squalor. This is
what it means to be a Muslim, or Christian, leader in a
multi-religious, multi-ethnic country. It is to serve all its citizens
to the best of your ability without fear or favour or discrimination.
It is to act in a manner that is in keeping with the best traditions
of your faith, so that you earn for your religion not ridicule, but
respect.
Ultimately, people like Nasir are standing against a very strong evil
current. The power of that current should not be underestimated and
they could well be drowned by it or swept aside. But for now they are
still standing. What they need is simple. They need more and more
Nigerians to stand up with them. For more politicians, religious
leaders, armed forces personnel, civil servants, bankers,
intellectuals, labour leaders, emirs and chiefs etc to say "no" to the
system we have been running so far and which has led us into this
abyss out of which we are just trying to crawl.
If you cannot raise your voice, much less your head, to be counted
among those who stand for change, then please do this one small thing
for me. Say, along with me, whisper if you like, a silent prayer: "May
Allah protect them, may Allah help them, may Allah guide them in
changing this country for the better."

Yes, who killed this Nigerian icon?
The federal police, SSS, and interpol must swing into action to
unearth the truth.
It's better to spread the drag net to snag all possible suspects now,
before they cover up evidence, run away, or commit more murder.
Arresting anybody because of financial abuse may not be popular, but,
inviting them to a friendly interview with the police as part of this
drag net makes more sense.

My Response:
Man, don't undermine the great extents at which science has gotten to today as regards alterations to human gender/sexuality. There is what they call pre-op transsexuals and post-op transsexualism... for clear understanding, google the subject matter, since here and now is not the time to pose explicit explanations.
Apart from changing the hormones, they can also completely change the physiology of the individual to his/her preferred gender. It takes a long process of evolution, but in the long run, the result is achieved. Hormonal re-constructional pills are available for sale in stores across US, South america, Asia and even online (you can check ebay/amazon), as well as several sex change doctors across the world. Thailand has the highest population of transgenders in the world, followed by Brazil, US, Italy. These people live freely and are comfortable in the prefered gender.
I'm not in anyway promoting intimate alterations, but we all must accept the imperfections in nature are always there. That an individual is biologically born of a particular sex does not mean the individual is a prototype to that gender. Nature has complexity variances that affect the general altitude to realities at large. The intimate organs do not serve as rigid reason to claim a intimate gender. Masculinity/femininity cut across every human person, be it male or female(there is an opposite gender behaviour in each person). How come we have men who look and behave like the opposite gender; and women who do the same as well? How come most men have facial hair while some don't? How come there could be cases of children born with more than 2 hands/legs?... all these point out the imperfections in nature that science can correct.
It amazes me that while men/women work their a55 off in some parts of the world, carrying out researches on how to better the human world, many of us languish here and kill ourselves over petty things(residual politicking and religious inclinations). Science rules anytime anyday!

the idea of male circumcision to us no longer practice it, as with many
christian practices they left us. Many consider it an abuse of a child's
choice to choose to cut off or leave the foreskin. There are many human
rights groups in the western world that fight against male
circumcision; you can google it.
It would surprise you that over 68% of Europeans and Americans combined are uncircumcised. Even many parts of Asia and the Jews themselves. Male circumcision is so old school; only rigidly upheld by Africans.

Opinion: Kano Emirship: Sanusi’s Many Frustrations.
The death of Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, to others is celebration while others are in pains. Born 83 years ago, on July 25, 1930, Mr. Bayero was appointed Emir on October 22, 1963. He was a former Nigerian ambassador to Senegal. His father, Abdullahi Bayero, also reigned as Emir for 27 years. Ado Bayero is the Emir of Kano and the son of Abdullahi Bayero, the former emir, who reigned for 27 years. Muhammadu Sanusi who was Ado Bayero's half-brother ruled after their father from 1953-1963. Following his dethronement in 1963, Muhammadu Inuwa ruled only for three months. After his death, Ado Bayero ascended the throne in October 1963. Bayero is one of the longest-serving emirs in the emirate's history.

Facts About Boko Haram That Will Change Your Perception.

1. The government misunderstood Boko Harram to be a Northern conspiracy against a South-South president. They forget that the first uprising was in 2009 when Yar'Adua was still president. It may be too late for us to wait to find out after a South-south president, when Boko Haram would not stop their attacks.
2. Boko Haram was underestimated by Nigeria and her government; many facts pointed to that and one of which is the attempted negotiation with the sect.
3. Our security men on the field are not well motivated to fight the sect and they do not trust the government to be void of complacency.
4. Corruption and insincerity on the part of the government in the fight against Boko Haram.
Facts that we must accept to begin an effective war against Boko Haram:
a. Boko Harram is a terror organization and one of the tactics of every terror organization is deceit. They trick their targets with false claims so they do not understand their true nature and origin, so the fight against them can either be impossible or difficult.
b. Terrorist organizations do not dialogue, though they may pretend to in an attempt to deceive their target.
c. Terrorists have only one goal and that is to cause terror. Their satisfaction is in killing, maiming, and causing pain to their target.
d. Terrorists have no religious or tribal loyalties. When they pretend to do, they only aim to deceive their target and gain an upper hand.
e. One of the weapons of terrorism is to cause disunity among their target and weaken their resistance.
f. The same way we have international NGOs and organizations who are investing money to make the world a better place is the same way we have international terrorists that are investing their money to make the world a bitter place and terrorize humans.
g. International terrorists are investing in Boko Harram and causing terror in Nigeria.
h. Boko Harram has declared war against Nigeria and the only way to stop them is to unite and fight back
we must diagnose our sickness and identify it before we get a cure. It is dangerous to have Typhoid fever and be treating malaria.
To an ordinary Southerner, Boko Haram is the creation of northern elites to make the Jonathan's administration ungovernable. To an ordinary Northerner, Boko Haram is the creation of the Jonathan-led government in order to decimate the population of northerners and to destroy their economy. But to Boko Haram there is no distinction between northerner and southerner or Muslim and Christians. Their goal is to cause terror and their target knows no such bounds.
Those who are asking the government for money to talk to Boko Haram over dialogue are just trying to take advantage of our pains to exploit the government and the people. There is nothing to talk about. Boko Haram is a terrorist group. The only thing we can do is to stop them.

Last year, a Twitter account (@GSElevator) published a popular article titled “Unofficial Goldman Sachs guide to being a man.”
Since then we’ve been itching to provide you with a Nigerian version. Here is the Nigerian version of Goldman Sachs guide to being a man, we hope you enjoy.
No one care if you graduated with a second class upper. The world is only interested in what you can deliver
Never look back and regret anything in your life, all of your experiences make up who you are today, if something were different, you might not
like who are anymore.
Always carry cash. A lot of extra cash
Get a suit. It does not matter if you look good dressing like Phyno or Wizkid.
Your father’s money is not your money.
Never stare at another man’s junk at the bathroom
If she exposes her body, then it’s okay to look, don’t stare.

WhatsApp Is Set To Introduce Free Calls by April.
WhatsApp Inc., the mobile messaging service that agreed to be acquired last week by Facebook Inc. for $19 billion, said Monday that it would offer voice calling as early as April, allowing free phone calls among WhatsApp's 465 million users. Jan Koum, the co-founder and chief executive of WhatsApp, also said during a speech at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that he is hoping to grow the service to one or two billion users. Mr. Koum said that the WhatsApp voice product would "focus on simplicity" as it has with its text-based messaging service. He said that WhatsApp would first release a version of the voice service for Apple Inc.'s
iPhone and Google Inc.'s Android platforms,
followed by services for Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Phone, as well as some phones by BlackBerry Ltd. and Nokia Corp.
"We want to continue to have that minimalistic approach to the product," he said. "We at WhatsApp want to get out of the way and let people communicate." Mr. Koum added that the voice product would "use the least amount of bandwidth, and we optimize the hell out of it."
Speaking about the Facebook acquisition announcement earlier this month, Mr. Koum said that the product wouldn't change, stressing that WhatsApp would remain independent. He cited Instagram's example, after the acquisition of the photo-sharing service by Facebook.
Mr. Koum said that WhatsApp was likely valuable to Facebook because "we both want to make the world more connected," though Mr. Koum stressed that WhatsApp wanted to know "as little as possible" about its users, including details such as a user's name. "There are no plans to change anything that we do with the product today," he said, using words like "minimalistic," "utilitarian" and "uncluttered" to describe his philosophy.

Sanusi Lamido Should Be Charged For Murder; Femi Fani Kayode
Seems like the last has yet to be seen or heard of the estranged former governor of the CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. This is what FFK wrote on a photo link of sanusi, the CBN governor on his facebook page, .What role did Sanusi Lamido Sanusi have to play in the public beheading of Akaluka, the igbo man in Kano who was accused of ''desecrating the koran''?
Why was Sanusi locked up in a Sokoto prison for his alleged role in the incident and why , was he not brought to justice for being amongst those that incited the crowd to behead Akaluka? Where is the report and why has it been supressed? Who were the others that incited the crowd that were summarily executed for doing so by the government of the day and why was Sanusi spared?
The above are very serious questions that need to be answered and if it is true that Lamido was in any way involved he should not only be removed from the Central Bank immediately but he must also be charged with murder. It is left to the Nigerian people to either demand answers to these questions or just let this whole thing slip away. One thing that I know is that it appears that Akaluka's blood and his headless body is now speaking from the grave and haunting his murderers.

The housing system in Nigeria is a funny one. Believe me, it
is. I don’t even know where to start from, but the basic look in is on how
screwed the general system is. Things go about the way and manner that pleases
them, and they just happen. In most cases, nobody cares. Blame the government
is the easy way out. After all, the government has failed the people and may
continually do so. Pathetic!
In a way, the Nigerian system promotes corruption and dirty
ills. The system makes the people go to the extreme. The system permeates
poverty, and unhealthy standards. The system stinks. In fact it reels of filth.
What more? The system is you and I, and we are what make the system what it is.
Shame!
